An expensive start!
The year 2025 started with not so good news, namely; the increase of VAT from 10% to 21% on electricity. This means that the January bill has become 10% more expensive compared to the December bill.
Also, many electricity contracts are reviewed every year, which can result in a rate increase of €0.01 to €0.03 / kWh. Although this is a small change, it can still be very noticeable on the final bill with high consumption, especially for the December bill.
Wintermonths
The month of December is often the most expensive month of the entire year when it comes to energy bills. During this month, there is often a higher consumption in the home, especially during the cold nights.
This results in a higher bill than you are used to.
Virtual Battery
However, we have seen energy bills from our customers, where the December bill was not that high, despite the higher consumption in the house and the slightly lower yield of the solar panels. This is because they have a virtual battery.
These customers sent a lot of energy back to the grid during the sunny months, for which they received compensation. However, their energy consumption was less than the compensation and they were therefore able to build up a balance in the virtual battery.
They then used this balance for the December bill, in order to compensate this bill as much as possible.
